    KNEE AND ANKLE JOINT KINEMATICS IN KENDO MOVEMENT AND THE REPEATABILITY

    Kendo, a Japanese martial art of sword fighting, comprises strike and thrust motion against a specific target of a part of an opponent’s body. Among kendo athletes, chronic Achilles tendon (AT) injuries are frequently observed only on the left side probably because a main power source lies in the left side of the lower body for the repetitive forward-back bounding steps in the strike motion. It has been reported that the AT injury may be linked to abnormal joint biomechanics among runners. In order to make better clinical decision on the AT injury treatment in kendo athletes, therefore, we should focus on joint biomechanics of the left side of the lower extremity in kendo movement.     CuPc Adsorption on Au(110)-(1 × 2): From a Monomer to a Periodic Chain

    Using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), we study the adsorption of copper-phthalocyanine (CuPc) on the anisotropic Au(110)-(1 × 2) surface as a function of coverage. For the initial adsorption at room temperature, we observe CuPc monomers as well as a molecular chain that forms along the step edge. By STM manipulation, we reveal that the CuPc adsorption is accompanied by surface reconstruction from the initial adsorption stage; the periodicity beneath the monomer and the chain changes locally from (1 × 2) to (1 × 1) and (1 × 3), respectively. This finding highlights that the Au atom mobility of the surface plays an essential role in CuPc adsorption. At higher coverage, we observe the development of CuPc chains along the [110] direction on the terrace with periodicities of (7 × 5) and (5 × 5), and compare the obtained results with those from the previous studies by diffraction methods

    Higher order glass-transition singularities in colloidal systems with attractive interactions

    The transition from a liquid to a glass in colloidal suspensions of particles interacting through a hard core plus an attractive square-well potential is studied within the mode-coupling-theory framework. When the width of the attractive potential is much shorter than the hard-core diameter, a reentrant behavior of the liquid-glass line, and a glass-glass-transition line are found in the temperature-density plane of the model. For small well-width values, the glass-glass-transition line terminates in a third order bifurcation point, i.e. in a A_3 (cusp) singularity. On increasing the square-well width, the glass-glass line disappears, giving rise to a fourth order A_4 (swallow-tail) singularity at a critical well width. Close to the A_3 and A_4 singularities the decay of the density correlators shows stretching of huge dynamical windows, in particular logarithmic time dependence.Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures, Phys.     Exploring the inner region of Type 1 AGNs with the Keck interferometer

    The exploration of extragalactic objects with long-baseline interferometers in the near-infrared has been very limited. Here we report successful observations with the Keck interferometer at K-band (2.2 um) for four Type 1 AGNs, namely NGC4151, Mrk231, NGC4051, and the QSO IRAS13349+2438 at z=0.108. For the latter three objects, these are the first long-baseline interferometric measurements in the infrared. We detect high visibilities (V^2 ~ 0.8-0.9) for all the four objects, including NGC4151 for which we confirm the high V^2 level measured by Swain et al.(2003). We marginally detect a decrease of V^2 with increasing baseline lengths for NGC4151, although over a very limited range, where the decrease and absolute V^2 are well fitted with a ring model of radius 0.45+/-0.04 mas (0.039+/-0.003 pc). Strikingly, this matches independent radius measurements from optical--infrared reverberations that are thought to be probing the dust sublimation radius. We also show that the effective radius of the other objects, obtained from the same ring model, is either roughly equal to or slightly larger than the reverberation radius as a function of AGN luminosity. This suggests that we are indeed partially resolving the dust sublimation region. The ratio of the effective ring radius to the reverberation radius might also give us an approximate probe for the radial structure of the inner accreting material in each object.     Bisphosphonate induces apoptosis and inhibits pro-osteoclastic gene expression in prostate cancer cells

    金沢大学医学部附属病院泌尿器科Aim: Bisphosphonates are well established for the management of cancer-induced skeletal complications. Recent studies suggest that bisphosphonates promote apoptosis of cancer cells as well as osteoclasts in bone metastatic sites. To determine the direct effects of bisphosphonate on prostate cancer, we examined the effects of minodronate on prostatic cancer cell growth and the expression of apoptosis-related proteins and osteoclastogenic factors. Methods: PC-3, DU145 and LNCaP cells were treated with amino-bisphosphonate minodronate. Then proliferation, apoptosis and expression of bcl-2, bax, poly (ADP)-ribose polymerase (PARP), caspase-3, receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand (RANKL), osteoprotegerin (OPG), matrix metalloproteinases-2 (MMP-2), and parathyroid hormone related protein (PTHrP) were assessed. Results: The proliferation of prostatic cancer cells was inhibited by minodronate. DNA fragmentation and TUNEL-positive nuclei were observed in minodronate-treated PC-3 cells. Minodronate decreased bcl-2 expression and induced bax expression, caspase-3 activity and degradation of PARP in DU145 and PC-3 cells. Minodronate decreased expression of RANKL, PTHrP and MMP-2 in PC-3 cells. Conclusions: Our results suggest that bisphosphonate not only promotes apoptosis directly but also decreases pro-osteoclastic gene expression in prostate cancer cells

    Reverberation Mapping Results for Five Seyfert 1 Galaxies

    We present the results from a detailed analysis of photometric and spectrophotometric data on five Seyfert 1 galaxies observed as a part of a recent reverberation mapping program. The data were collected at several observatories over a 140-day span beginning in 2010 August and ending in 2011 January. We obtained high sampling-rate light curves for Mrk 335, Mrk 1501, 3C120, Mrk 6, and PG2130+099, from which we have measured the time lag between variations in the 5100 Angstrom continuum and the H-beta broad emission line. We then used these measurements to calculate the mass of the supermassive black hole at the center of each of these galaxies. Our new measurements substantially improve previous measurements of MBH and the size of the broad line-emitting region for four sources and add a measurement for one new object. Our new measurements are consistent with photoionization physics regulating the location of the broad line region in active galactic nuclei.Comment: 45 pages, 5 figures.     Reverberation Mapping of the Seyfert 1 Galaxy NGC 7469

    A large reverberation mapping study of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 7469 has yielded emission-line lags for Hbeta 4861 and He II 4686 and a central black hole mass measurement of about 10 million solar masses, consistent with previous measurements. A very low level of variability during the monitoring campaign precluded meeting our original goal of recovering velocity-delay maps from the data, but with the new Hbeta measurement, NGC 7469 is no longer an outlier in the relationship between the size of the Hbeta-emitting broad-line region and the AGN luminosity. It was necessary to detrend the continuum and Hbeta and He II 4686 line light curves and those from archival UV data for different time-series analysis methods to yield consistent results.Comment: 9 Pages, 7 figures, 6 tables.     A Model for Type 2 Coronal Line Forest (CLiF) AGNs

    We present a model for the classification of Coronal Line Forest Active Galactic Nuclei (CLiF AGNs). CLiF AGNs are of special interest due to their remarkably large number of emission lines, especially forbidden highionization lines (FHILs). Rose et al. suggest that their emission is dominated by reflection from the inner wall of the obscuring region rather than direct emission from the accretion disk. This makes CLiF AGNs laboratories to test AGN-torus models. Modeling an AGN as an accreting supermassive black hole surrounded by a cylinder of dust and gas, we show a relationship between the viewing angle and the revealed area of the inner wall. From the revealed area, we can determine the amount of FHIL emission at various angles. We calculate the strength of [Fe VII]λ6087 emission for a number of intermediate angles (30°, 40°, and 50°) and compare the results with the luminosity of the observed emission line from six known CLiF AGNs. We find that there is good agreement between our model and the observational results.     Perioperative Complications After Aorto-iliac Stenting: Associated Factors and Impact on Follow-up Cardiovascular Prognosis

    ObjectivesTo investigate factors associated with 30-day perioperative complications (POC) after aorto-iliac (AI) stenting, and to compare follow-up cardiovascular prognosis between patients with and without POC.Materials and methodsThis was a retrospective multicenter study. We used a multicenter database of 2012 consecutive patients who successfully underwent AI stenting for peripheral arterial disease in 18 centers in Japan from January 2005 to December 2009 to analyze independent predictors of POC and impact of POC on prognosis by logistic regression and a Cox proportional hazard regression model, respectively.ResultsMean age was 71 ± 9 years (median: 72 years; range: 37–98 years), and 1,636 patients (81%) were men. POC occurred in 126 patients (6.3%). In multivariate logistic regression analysis, old age (≥80 years), critical limb ischemia (CLI), and Trans Atlantic Inter-Societal Consensus (TASC) II class C/D were independently associated with POC with adjusted odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals (CI) of 1.9 (1.3–2.9), 2.3 (1.5–3.4), and 2.4 (1.6–3.4), respectively. Out of 2012 patients, 1995 were followed up for more than 30 days (mean: 2.6 ± 1.5 years; range: 2–2,393 days). In a Cox hazard regression model adjusted for baseline clinical characteristics, POC was positively and independently associated with follow-up major adverse cardiac events (adjusted hazard ratio [HR]: 1.9; 95% CI: 1.3–2.8; p = .002), but not with major adverse limb events and target lesion revascularization (adjusted HR: 1.4; 95% CI: 0.7–2.7; p = .25; and adjusted HR: 1.2; 95% CI 0.6–2.6; p = .568), respectively.ConclusionsAge >80 years, CLI, and TASC C/D lesion were positively associated with POC after AI stenting. Occurrence of POC appears to adversely affect follow-up cardiovascular, but not limb and vessel prognosis
